A hit or miss Romance August 7, 2008

I probably can't blame it on Yasmine Galenorn that I can't get into Witchling or that I can't get myself to like the main character Camille. Unlike a lot of other authors in the Paranormal Romance field she doesn't give you the feeling that she was formerly hired to write the Dear Penthouse letters, but rather seems to actually come from the Romance writers sections.
Her style reminds more of Jackie Collins or Shirley Conran than, say, Laurell K. Hamilton.
Still, it's not only Camille's Sex & the City character (a obsession with Clothes, Shoes and overpriced Coffee that makes her come across as a shallow, superficial jet-setter) that annoys me, but also that Galenorn's style reminds of a debut novel. A lot of points get reiterated until you can't hear, make that read, them anymore. For example states Camille three times in the first hundred pages that her sister Menolly is a comparatively new Vampire and therefore can't control herself completely when there's Blood around, by the third time you want to shout at her "We got that the first time!". Another problem she struggles with is exposition, in Witchling she clearly tends towards over-exposition, not only reiterating things we already now (Raina's exil from Fairyland) but doing it in a forced sounding manner explaining in needless detail what happened, presumably talking to another character (Chase) but actually only bringing it up to have an excuse to show the readers more of the workings of Fairyland.
Now, Mrs. Galenorn, take a deep breath and repeat after me: 'I do not need to take my readers by the hand, they are intelligent enough to put 1 and 1 together on their own.'
And breath...
On the other hand she introduces things to late in the story, Chase's observation that Camille doesn't like humans would have made a far better point had it been brought up in the opening chapter of the book.
It clearly would be unfair to rant along about her book without mentioning that she can be truly funny and smart in her writing. There's a mischievous side shining through every now and then that gives me hope. Witchling is certainly hit or miss (with me it's miss) but I believe that once she found her own pace and learned enough from early mistakes that she will become a voice to look forward to in the field of Paranormal Romance, an author I believe that will be best liked by fans of tongue-in-cheek humour.

Camille ist eine der drei D'Artigo Schwestern. Sie sind zur Haelfte Menschlich, zur Haelfte Faerie. Camille ist zudem eine Hexe, Delilah eine Gestaltwandlerin und Menolly eine Vampirin. Die drei arbeiten auf der irdischen Seite der Otherworld Intelligence Agency, als Jocko, ein Riese der ebenfalls fuer die Agentur arbeitete tot aufgefunden wird. Und sein Tod weist auf die Anwesenheit von Daemonen hin - etwas das es eigentlich auf der Erde gar nicht geben duerfte.
Es haette ja so schoen sein koennen: drei Schwestern mit Kick-Ass-Powern, die die Welt retten duerfen, eigentlich Material, das viel verspricht. Doch leider sind die Charaktere nicht nur flach und stereotyp sondern sogar entnervend. Zwischen Morduntersuchungen und Daemonenabklatschen hat Haupt-Heldin Camille immerhin noch zeit fuer mehrere Hundert Dollar Unterwaesche einzukaufen und ihre Oberweite durch Push-Up-Bhs zu betonen. Nicht dass sie etwa oberflaechlich waere, denn immerhin ist sie in jeder Actionsszene mit sexy Marken-Designer-Klamoettchen ausgestattet. Keine wirklich neue Idee die in dieses Buch auch leider ueberhaupt nicht reinpasst. Auch der etwas lahme Plot, die fehlende Spannung, die enormen Logikloecher und die ueberdrehten Sex-Anspielungen konnten da nichts rausreissen. Als kleiner Trost bleibt einem, dass die beiden naechsten Schwestern eigentlich kaum genauso unsympathisch wie Camille sein koennen.

Oh je, da bin ich nun seit einiger Zeit fleissig am Lesen im Urban Fantasy Bereich und fand so Perlen wie Kelley Armstrongs "Women of the Otherworld", Kim Harrisons Helding Rachel Morgan in den Hollows oder auch Patricia Briggs "Moon Called". Tja, und dann dieses Buch. Und ich Trottel hatte sogar den zweiten Teil gleich mitbestellt. Okay, da sind nun also drei Schwestern- halb Mensch, halb Faerie. Jede der drei Schwestern sieht anders aus, die eine klein, zierlich und rothaarig- und Vampir. Die andere ueppig, sinnlich, schwarzhaarig und ...tatata.. Hexe. Die dritte gross, blond, athletisch und ...tusch... Werkatze. Alle drei daueraufgebrezelt, angeblich magisch minderbegabt, aber sie loesen natuerlich alle Probleme im Handumdrehen. Und genau da liegt mein Problem mit diesem Buch/ Buechern. Die Heldinnen wissen beispielsweise nicht, wie sie sich gegen Werspinnen, die gegen Mondmagie- Spezialitaet der Hexe- immun sind, wehren sollen. Zwei Seiten Exposition dieses schwierigen Problems... aber da klingelt es schon an der Tuer und ein Besucher aus dem Elfenland ist da, der sofort sagt, "klar kann ich das" (echt passiert in Changeling). Und so geht das die ganze Zeit. Ein Deus ex machina nach dem anderen. Bei groesseren Schwierigkeiten gibt es da noch einen natuerlich mordsgefaehrlichen Drachen, der eine aeusserst sexy Maennergestalt annehmen kann, aber natuerlich eine Schwaeche fuer Hexlein hat. Falls er ueberfordert ist, werden dann die Hoeheren Maechte angerufen und die liefern die Loesung. Auch dieser Vorgang braucht keine paar Seiten. Mich hat das genervt.
Keine Entdeckung, kein grosses Arbeiten an irgendwas, keine innere, glaubhafte persoenliche Entwicklung. Falls jemand echt langweilig ist und er irgendwas fantasymaessiges mit tollen Typen lesen will- viel Spass. Alle anderen sollten lieber bei den oben angegebene Autorinnen bleiben. Wer es sanfter mag, wird auch an Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire Serie weit mehr Freude finden.

I read this book a year or so ago when it was first released and remember enjoying it. I decided to read this again because I couldn't remember alot about the story and didn't want to read the new 2nd part in the series 'Changeling' without re-reading this book.
I think I enjoyed this book even more the second time around. I really love the characters and the storyline. The writing style is great and I can't wait to read the second book. I already have it on my Tbr pile but I will give myself a week or 2 before starting it. Now I have the story and characters back fresh in my mind I know the 2nd book will be a great read!
